THEMBA introduces some very talented newcomers, the ‘hidden treasures’ discovered in the local communities of the Eastern Cape. The young children in THEMBA all hail from the Eastern Cape and none of them had ever acted before. Their outstanding performances reflected the depth of talent that is untapped in this region of the country.
The Director, Stefanie Sycholt says ‘These children were a pleasure and a joy to work with. To see how their talents unfolded in those two months, how enthusiastically they participated in this new film world that they had never been introduced to before, with what professionalism and dedication they tackled their roles, made me hugely proud to be a South African.
Nat Singo – Themba
Has been acting since the age of twelve. He made his film debut playing the leading role, Musa in BEAT THE DRUM directed by David Hickson in 2002. His other film credits include Madiba in THE WOODEN CAMERA directed by Ntshaveni Wa Luruli , IN MY COUNTRY directed by John Boorman , Sipho inv RED DUST Directed by Tom Hooper starring Hilary Swank, the kid THE TRAIL and 10,000 BC directed by Roland Emmerich His television work includes the Canadian TV series SCOUT.
Simphiwe Dana- Mandisa
Makes her film acting debut in THEMBA. Simphiwe Dana was born in Gcuwa (former Butterworth, Transkei) and belongs to the Xhosa people. She grew up with the traditional music of her homeland, which she combines, as a singer, with African Pop, Hip-Hop, Soul, Gospel and Jazz. In South Africa, she has been one of the Top Stars for many years and received many awards (South African Music Awards, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, as well as Platin Status for her debut album). During the Football World Cup in Berlin, she performed in front of the Brandenburger Tor, as well as at the Jazz Fest in Vienna. In 2007, she toured throughout Europe for several months.
Jens Lehmann – John Jacobs (Big John)
Makes his acting debut in THEMBA. Currently with VFB Stuttgart, he began his professional goalkeeping career in 1989 with FC Schalke 04, which gained promotion to the German Bundesliga in 1991. He moved to Dortmund in 1999, winning the Bundesliga in 2001-02. In 2003 he moved to the English club Arsenal, which won the Premier League in that year. Lehmann has won 61 caps for the German national team, representing his country at the World Cup in 2006 and European Championships in 2008. He will be in South Africa to commentate the world cup for a German TV Station.
Patrick Mofokeng- Luthando
Patrick Mofokeng is a South African actor best known for his role as King Sibiya in the television drama ZONE 14. He also played the leading role of Solomon Sithole in the film THE GOOD PROVIDER of the Heartlines series in 2006 and starred in the TV movie PRIDE OF AFRICA. The mini-series WHEN WE WERE BLACK (Reverend Serote) swept the drama category at the 2007 SAFTAs, with seven Awards, including Best TV Drama.
Recent feature film roles include Linga Moonsamy in Clint Eastwood’s INVICTUS opposite Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon; Willie in MASTER HAROLD AND THE BOYS with Ving Rhames and Freddie Highmore directed by Lonny Price
Nomhle Nkonyeni- Sangoma
Nomhle Nkonyeni is a renowned veteran actress, who has shared her gift with audiences, in Africa and internationally, for the past four decades. Her wealth of experience was gained through her outstanding work as a stage, screen and television actor and director (SKIN, RED DUST, THE WOODEN CAMERA). Of South African descent and born in Port Elizabeth, Nomhle has established herself and has appropriately been identified as “A major part of the history of theatre in this country.”
Rapulana Seiphemo- Vuyo
Is one of South Africa’s best know actors, his performances have been critically acclaimed, be they on stage, TV or the silver screen.
In 1989 Rapulana gained his drama diploma in Acting and Playwriting at the Federated Union of Black Arts Academy in Johannesburg South Africa. He then went on to complete a B.A. in Theatre at the Arts College Station Texas A & M University USA.
Kagiso Motsei- Sipho – older
Won an Avanti award for best actor in 2001.His film work includes ROOIBOS WITH MILK directed by Rainer Kaufman in 2007 and the lead in Stefanie Sycholts film MALUNDE in 2000. His television credits include SOUL BUDDYZ 2001-2005
KHULULELA in 2002 and JUSTICE FOR ALL.
