Founded in 1991, SCORE is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation using sport as a medium of development throughout South Africa, Namibia and Zambia.
SCORE’s mission is to use sport to provide the youth with valuable skills and opportunities they need to succeed in life and contribute to their communities.
SCORE trains young people in sports, leadership and life-skills and builds community capacity to establish sustainable sports structures and programmes. Young people form teams and clubs, and they become coaches and sports leaders who provide opportunities for children to play and learn, teaching skills that can be used both on and off the sports field. Sport and physical activities are also used to build awareness about social issues, with trained sports leaders encouraging peers to discuss issues affecting their lives and their communities.
SCORE is also a founding member of the Kicking AIDS Out! network, which works globally to use sport to address HIV/AIDS and related issues. Using Kicking AIDS Out! methods, SCORE brings people together to participate in fun, educational games and sporting activities that promote HIV/AIDS awareness and deliver knowledge and practical skills on how to make positive choices and live a positive and healthy life.
SCORE recognises that film, like sport, is a creative and dynamic way to engage youth and use as a platform to spark discussion and debate. The story of Themba resonates strongly with the work SCORE does and the organisation’s aim to use sport to address the Millennium Development Goals. The film demonstrates that sport, and football in particular, can provide a safe space for young people to engage with and support one another, to become friends and to learn and practice valuable skills and life lessons. During this landmark FIFA World Cup year, Themba draws attention to the power of sport to address social issues both as a platform for advocacy and as an instrument for change in the community.
SCORE will combine existing Kicking Aids Out! training sessions with the Themba film screenings and discussions. They are very excited to be part of this ground breaking initiative and look forward to this new opportunity to combine film with their sports programming, and to continue to find innovative ways with partners to provide hope, awareness and the skills and knowledge for young people to positively change their lives and the lives of those around them.
